Star Wars Galaxies Storyteller

I’ve always lamented that the game with greatest toolset for self-expression and roleplaying was tied to an ever-changing combat engine that never seemed to live up to that potential.  I’m talking about Star Wars Galaxies, of course.

I don’t know whether it’s because so many people had such high hopes for it or because the bad reputation it developed through the occasionally-drastic changes it implemented, but the game doesn’t seem to get much attention anymore.  Shame, really.  They still manage some interesting ideas.

“Storyteller” is one of them.

As “Storyteller” is shaping up, it appears to simply be a way for players to stage their own events with controls a few inches closer to the role of a classic GM. I’m still trying to get all the details, but it seems that you’ll have the ability to buy tokens that allow you to place objects like crashed or parked starships, containers, and other temporary decorations.  You’ll be able to drop NPC’s- even combat NPC’s.

To keep from griefing concerns, the combat NPC’s will only affect those ‘invited to your story.’

Think about that potential.

It isn’t Neverwinter Nights GM mode, but it’s giving the players a real way to create their own stories in the game that’s far more flexible than any of the big-name static worlds we’ve been seeing of late.

Though I still miss the flexibility of the skill tree and the current combat engine isn’t my style, I have to give a nod of approval for this one.
